Photo Friday: Chicago's Garrett Popcorn

If you are participating in Photo Friday this week, don't forget to link back to this post. Linkbacks help new people find out about Photo Friday keep the carnival growing from week to week, ultimately bringing more traffic back to you!

Whenever we travel, I focus on eating local food, not chain-restaurant food. E is an incredibly picky eater, so that can sometimes be tough. On every trip, though, we discover something so wonderful that it makes up for the stressful points. In Barcelona, it was Churros and Chocolate, in New Mexico we enjoyed shave ice with fresh apple cider instead of syrup. On our recent trip to Chicago E was in awe as we walked into Garrett Popcorn, a store entirely devoted to fresh, delicious popcorn. Look how happy he is with the huge bag of mixed cheese & caramel popcorn!

On a side note, BlogHer will be in Chicago this year on July 24th and 25th. If you'll be attending, let me know!

Wouldn't it be great if our kids just chowed the local chow? Imagine how much easier travel would be if they did. Mine aren't so much picky as schizophrenic. One day chicken's fine, the next it's nauseating. Sigh.

We can spend hours walking around stores like that! Our favorite is a candy store in Savannah where they make saltwater taffy and it travels all over the store!

We have a popcorn store in Grand Rapids, MI, about an hour from us. we LOVE LOVE LOVE going there!! yum.

A popcorn store opened up in our city a while ago, and I've been meaning to go down there to check it out for possible holiday gift ideas :)

I remember enjoying the post where you described getting that popcorn. Although I've been to Chicago many times, I've actually never had it, so it is on the list - maybe at BlogHer?

    Very cute photo, per usual!

@jamie he's very reliable. he just doesn't like food. except when we're on vacation, and then he hates it even more ;)
@jen yum! I have very fond memories of a salt water taffy store on Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey... the wharf was near my preschool when I was little & we used to pick up fish for dinner there. That taffy store was the real draw for me though
    @jessiev mmmm
@mara if you come to blogher I will definitely treat you (and any other of my bloggy friends) to popcorn!

My son is an insanely picky eater. we have narrowed our food down to 3 things: pizza, hot dog and pop corn, so he would love chicago:)
I am finally able to join Photo Friday.

Yah, my kid would be all over chocolate and churros and popcorn too. And in Cuba, the ubiquitous [and a little bit scary to me] ketchup-on-spaghetti did the trick also. Thankfully, because there weren't a lot of other options there that he would even try. Ketchup is a vegetable, right?

Great photos everyone! It was cool to see the one of Cinque Terra too since we're doing that for Galavanting in March.

Haven't tried the popcorn, will need to let the kids try some next time we're downtown...

Debbie: I'm excited that BlogHer is in Chicago this year and will definitely be there (er, here). I hope to get to meet a bunch of you in person!

    Love the pics everyone!

Debbie, you are making me long for my Midwest roots. I survived college at IndianaU by stopping by a popcorn stand at the Union where they had probably 50 toppings.
Guess the NorCal kettle corn will need to suffice.

I was just commenting on your guest post (Simple Mom) and decided to come check out your blog. I am so excited that the first post is about Chicago! This is the city we travel to the most, and this is awesome! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Garret's popcorn, we mix the carmel and cheese together and it is amazing.

I am definitely bookmarking this for future reference. I love your site!

We love Garrett's, too. I remember stopping in there at the end of a work or school day during my years in Chicago. Our neighbor brings it for the boys every time she's in the city. Our neighbor is awesome.

Yum, popcorn! Next to chocolate, it's my favorite snack! And cheese flavored popcorn makes me think of when I was little. My dad would make his special "cheesy" popcorn for family movie night. He'd melt real butter and velveta cheese and pour it over the popcorn and we would all dig in while watching The Labyrinth. Fun times.

not sure about the cheese and caramel combination. I'd have caramel and caramel.
